CEREC Technology in San Diego

Dental crowns have been a staple of restorative dentistry for many years. If you have a tooth with severe decay or even a crack that threatens the structural integrity of a tooth, then a dental crown, also called a cap, can lend support and form. Time was when having a dental crown necessitated two appointments at the dentist. Today, however, Dr. Salami can place a crown in one visit thanks to the CEREC system in our office.

What is CEREC?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction. This system allows Dr. Salami and her staff to design and manufacture a variety of all-ceramic restorations including crowns, inlays and onlays. With CEREC, your new dental crown will be placed on your tooth at the conclusion of a single visit.

How does the CEREC System Work?

The CEREC system is comprised of three components: a digital camera, a CAD/CAM software system and a milling unit. Together, these remove the trouble with having a dental crown—namely the need to sit for a molded impression of your tooth and having to return for a second trip to our office in order to complete the procedure.

Instead of taking an impression, we use CEREC’s digital camera to create a virtual image of your tooth. The CEREC CAD/CAM software then uses this image to design your dental crown. The design includes the precise fit and shape to ensure that the crown is comfortable in your mouth. Even the correct color is designated in the design.

Once the computer system has completed the design of your new dental crown, the rest of the process is completed by the CEREC milling unit. In less than 30 minutes, your crown is carved from a single block of high quality porcelain.

At the conclusion of your appointment, Dr. Salami will examine the finished CEREC crown. If any minor adjustments are necessary, those can be made in our office with hand instruments. We can also further polish the crown to provide an even closer match to the luster of your natural teeth. Finally, the crown will be cemented on top of your prepared tooth. Once in place, your new CEREC crown will blend seamlessly into your smile.

With proper oral hygiene care at home and regularly scheduled dental checkups with the Serenity Dental Group in San Diego, you can expect your CEREC crown to last for decades.
